چکیده

When the design of directional signage takes into account both the needs of different types of end users and the nuances of a specific environment, this can greatly enhance a localised wayfinding system. This need for contextualised wayfinding design is particularly apparent within zoological gardens, as the presence of captive animals represents a distinctive challenge in terms of sign design. Equally, zoological gardens are visited by a wide range of people, including foreign tourists, hence the increased need for signage to be universally comprehensible. Observations from four United Kingdom zoological gardens revealed that on-site directional signs display either text alone, or pictograms and text. This finding highlighted a missed opportunity in terms of depicting species-specific detail, as photographic imagery can offer an enhanced level of detail, when compared to equivalent pictograms. Importantly, from an inclusive design perspective, photographs can increase access to information. Visitors at the Welsh Mountain Zoo were asked which of two directional sign designs they preferred, using self-report measures. One sign displayed a photograph and one displayed a pictogram. Results were recorded at three separate viewing distances. The experiment hypothesis was that people would prefer the photographic sign, due to its vibrancy and clarity. Quantitative and qualitative results from 219 participants show that overall the sign that displayed a photograph was preferred. This has indicated that in a zoological context photographs should be considered as a communication medium on directional signage.

Effects of Display and Ambient Luminance on Preferences for Digital Signage

Preferred brightness may depend on many variables including image luminance and ambient illumination. To better understand the effects of these variables we asked observers to rate natural images according to their preferred brightness. Surprisingly, ratings plateaued at moderate luminance levels, and were only weakly influenced by ambient lighting.

Developing family-friendly signage in a South African paediatric healthcare setting.

BACKGROUND Multiple renovations and changing flow in a tertiary children's hospital in Cape Town resulted in numerous signs being posted in the corridors and units, making wayfinding extremely complex. A request from nursing management prompted the formation of a learning collaborative of nurses from all departments to improve wayfinding signage. OBJECTIVES The project aimed to contribute to ...

Various approaches to a human preference analysis in a digital signage display design

The paper is concerned with various ways of analysing the subjective assessment of displaying digital signage content. In the beginning the brief description of the signage system evolution is described and next, the carried out experiment is depicted. The preferences of the 32 subjects were obtained using pairwise comparisons of the designed screen formats. Then the priorities were derived by ...

Automatic Face Recognition via Local Directional Patterns

Automatic facial recognition has many potential applications in different areas of humancomputer interaction. However, they are not yet fully realized due to the lack of an effectivefacial feature descriptor. In this paper, we present a new appearance based feature descriptor, the local directional pattern (LDP), to represent facial geometry and analyze its performance inrecognition. An LDP feat...
